Movement for the Independence of Liguria

The values of Ligurian Civilization

Central importance of  work: the historical Republic of Genoa had strongly relied on good and honest work, in a world that relied more on parassite revenues of feudal landlords largely based on the exploitation of poor people's work;
True solidarity and protection of weaker people, in which the Republic of Genoa was a true and historical standpoint, with the construction of hospitals and several institutions for poor and sick people; the Republic also protected workers against employers thanks to a true social legislation enacted by a Magistrate;
Struggle against any kind of racism, to the point that everyone in the territories of the republic had a chance, in dependance of his/her abilities; some Albanian refugees came to Genoa as slaves, lately gaining freedom and conquering richness: they gave birth to the famous Durazzo family that gave eight "doge" (the supreme magistrate) to the Republic;
Complete separation between State and Church: in the Republic of Genoa, priests and bishops were not allowed to have civil positions;
Religious freedom and prohibition to any fundamentalisms: people were free to practice their own religions in the Republic, while in many other countries Inquisition was at work;
Republican form of the institutions: the Republic of Genoa was a democratic republic in a world where feudal, dispotic and hereditary monarchies dominated; the Main Council was composed of 400 members, with deliberations requiring a 2/3 or 4/5 majority;
Federal internal organization, suitable for people who don't like war as an instrument of domination and conquest; ligurian communities had a statute of their own and were often linked to the Republic of Genoa by federal treaties;
Protection of nature, landscapes and historical architectures, for a good preservation of a very rich heritage, in terms of natural resources and historical landmarks (the "Palazzi dei Rolli" in Genoa are a UNESCO cultural heritage);
Strict control of the actions of governing authorities, as the Republic did with the institution of the Supreme Control Magistrates (Supremi Sindacatori);
Refusal of tyranny and war of conquest: the Republic often acquired its territories by buying them from local landlords and established commercial relationships rather then domination relationships with its colonies.
